Bone Grafting

Bone Grafting for Dental Implants in Portsmouth Ohio

When one or more teeth are missing, it can lead to jaw bone loss at the site of the gap, which can create potential consequences, including drifting teeth, collapsed facial profile, limited lip support, TMJ pain, difficulty in chewing and speaking, and sinus expansion. With our bone grafting options combined with dental implants, Dr. Walls can restore your oral and overall health with aesthetic benefits. Dr. Walls will determine which bone graft materials are right for you.

Do you have enough bone?

When you have missing teeth, the jawbone deteriorates, leaving poor quality and quantity of bone suitable for placement of dental implants. With bone grafting, Dr. Walls can replace the bone where it’s missing & promote new bone growth in that location!

  • Did you have a tooth extraction? After an extraction, some walls of your socket are very thin (such as in your upper and lower front teeth), which complicates the healing process. A bone graft is often needed at the time of the tooth extraction to help your body fill in the empty socket with bone. In turn, you’ll have the volume of bone needed for implant placement several months later.

  • Do you want implants but have inadequate bone? This could have happened when your tooth was removed many years ago, which makes your bony ridge extremely thin. In this case, a bone graft can happen to fuse to your pre-existing bone to make you a candidate for dental implants. Bone grafting is usually a relatively comfortable office procedure.

  • Is your sinus cavities too large or low? This often occurs when teeth in the back of a person’s upper jaw have been removed many years before, and the amount of bone available for implant placement is limited. Dr. Walls can do a sinus grafting procedure to elevate the membrane that lines the sinus. Then, he’ll restore the bone height and ensure that dental implants of an adequate length can be placed.
